About 8,000 people are employed on the Perth Airport estate. Some of them work for airlines, airport retailers or other aviation related businesses. Others work for businesses that have located their offices and workplaces on airport estate which are not related to aviation.
The following bodies are important to the protection of our Australian borders and the well being of our community. Australian Customs and Border Protection Service
Australian Customs and Border Protection Service is Australia’s primary border protection agency. It plays an important role in protecting Australia’s borders from the entry of illegal and harmful goods and unauthorised people. Customs has a proud history and plays an increasingly important role in today’s security environment.
Customs Detector Dog Program plays an important role in helping to protect Australia from illegal imports such as drugs, firearms and explosives. Detector dogs are trained to find goods hidden in luggage, parcels, mail, cargo containers, vessels, vehicles, aircraft and on people.

DAFF Biosecurity, which was previously called Australian Quarantine Inspection Services or AQIS, protects the Australian environment against pests and diseases brought in from overseas. They inspect incoming luggage, cargo, mail, animals, plants and products made from plants.

What do the beagles do?
DAFF Biosecurity uses beagles at Perth Airport because their sense of smell is at least 100 times more sensitive than humans’. When beagles detect an odour in luggage they sit next to the luggage.
